Vladimir Vysotsky's birthday. Would have been.

He was a year younger than my dad. The first time I'd ever seen my father cry was while listening to his songs.

Now I am again listening to his songs, and am glad to be from There.

Some protein every day is an absolute necessity. I keep forgetting this.

I do eat meat, that is, am not a vegetarian; but usually don't buy it, because it seems expensive. Once in a while, though, it is good, like tonight's (smallish quantity of) ground beef in tomato-cream sauce over pasta. With herbs. Balanced? Mostly.

Also ventured into the land of tofu and bought Soy Boy dogs. They claim to have no wheat or dairy, and to provide me with 14g (~25% RDA) of protein per two links. We will see what they taste like tomorrow; between them, the ground beef and eggs, I should be set for a week or so.

All of this was prompted by today's annoyance – again – at being constantly hungry when I work. When I complained about this a couple of days ago, my colleague (and now officemate) C. (no, not that Cee) immediately asked if I'd had any protein. I thought about it and decided that no, not for three or four days. She said, "yeah, I kept forgetting the importance of that too, when I was in grad school. Then I started paying attention to protein in my diet, and didn't feel nearly as hungry between meals."

She's right, of course. I've noticed this before, and seem to have to relearn it every semester.
